A passion for clay

Tonya Johnson is originally from the mountains of Pike County, Kentucky. She moved to Louisville in 1991 to complete a degree in biology at the University of Louisville. In January of 1992, pursuing a lifetime desire, she enrolled in her first ceramics class under the instruction of Ginny Marsh. In 1997 she continued her work under the guidance of Michelle Coakes with a Master´s Degree in the creative arts, concentration in ceramics following in 1999. Since then Tonya has continued to pursue her passion for clay and teaching, establishing Payne Street Pottery as a teaching studio in August 2000.

More than a hobby

Working in clay is more than a hobby, it is a lifestyle. It isn´t something you leave behind at the end of the day. It is a process that is woven throughout my life, in one way or another, everyday, and provides community through the interaction of working with others who also feel passionately about clay.
